Mecklenburg’s Early Voting Numbers
Are the Voter Turnout numbers up or down?
The Numbers are Down
This is true, when comparing the 2022 primary to the 2020 primary. However, this is not surprising, 2020 was a Presidential primary year, Presidential primaries are always the higher turnout years. And in 2020, Joe Biden had not scurried the nominate at the time of the North Carolina Primary.
It is not Apples to Apples
The last decade Charlotte’s early voting process has been inconstant. Some primary election years had 10 days of early voting and other years the first 5 primary days, or so, were only at one location. In 2020, there are 15 days of early voting at multiple locations (just like there are for the general election early voting). This election there are 17 Days of Early voting the most ever.
The Number are Way Up
This is true, if you are comparing the 2019 Charlotte City Council Primary to the Current City Council Primary. Council races are held on odd years, last years race was delayed to 2022, subsequently this years voter turnout is nearly twice as large as 2019’s earl voting totals.
We have nearly as many early voters this year as there were total voters fort the 2017 election. The 2017 City Council election had a competitive Mayor Primary between Incumbent Jennifer Roberts and Vi Lyles, that year there were 43,434 total voters, compared to this year 41,130 early voters.
