The Budget Fight
While the CMS Board of Education writes and approves the annual operating budget, it is the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners who funds the budget. This year the County elected to withhold $56 million from CMS’s budget request. This has created a dispute between the County and the School District, which is now being resolved through private mediation. If mediation is not successfully by August 1, a formula, directed by state law, will determine the how much total funding the county must provide the school district.
The $56 million is only 1% of the total budget.
