New Sign Regulations
Chapter 13: Signs
On October 21st, the Charlotte City Council will vote to update the City’s Sign Ordinance.

This is the first major rewrite of the sign ordinance since 1992 and it will reduce the regulations from 76 pages to 40 pages. This ordinance also changes the pervious policy of banning murals on the side of buildings.

Temporary Off-Premise Advertising Signs also referred as bandit signs are allowed:

Only on Weekends, 3:00p Friday - until 6:00p Sunday or 8:00a-6:00p on a holiday.
Only two signs per property (parcel), per establishment.
Limited to four square feet in area and four feet in height.
Cannot be affixed to a tree, fence, unity pole or light fixtures.
Can not be located closer than 11 feet from the edge of the pavement of any roadway or alley, or within any public right-of-ways.
Political Signs
Campaign yard signs are now categorized as Noncommercial Message Signs: Any sign permitted by these regulations may display or publish a noncommercialmessage. This includes signs that both require and do not require a permit. - 13.2.c.1
Noncommercial message signs are permittedin all districts.
Noncommercial message signs are ground or wall signs. There is no limit on the number of noncommercial message signs permitted.
The sign area of a ground and wall-mountedsign is limited to 16 square feet in area. Ground signs are limited to four feet in height.
Ground-mounted signs shall not be located closer than 11 feet from the edge of the pavement of any roadway or alley, or withinany public right-of-ways.
Noncommercial message signs shall not be illuminated.

Painted wall signs are permitted for all non-residential uses in any district. Painted wall signs are regulated separately and do not count toward the maximum sign area of wall-mounted signs.
Painted wall signs are permitted on each facade of a structure. There is no size limit for a painted wall sign.
Nothing in this section shall prevent an installer from incorporating their name or other identifying information as part of thepainted wall sign.
