Four Year City Council Terms

Charlotte City Council is again exploring establishing four-year staggard city council terms. In 2020, the Citizen Advisory Committee on Governance provided recommendations for restructuring Charlotte City Council. These recommendations included term lengths, compensation, and council district composition and non-partisan elections.

On January 9, 2023, the City Council Governance Committee recommended a ballot referendum for:
- Expanding Council Terms from 2 to 4 years
- Creating Staggard Terms
- Creating an 8th City Council District.
